On Holocaust Remembrance Day, as a child survivor, my thoughts often take me back to being born four months after Germany and Russia attacked and occupied Poland.
As the years go by, I find myself reflecting more and more on how those early childhood years have influenced who I am today. My parents and I were one of the lucky ones to have survived, while 6,000,000 Jews did not. I most likely would not be here today if it were not for a courageous Catholic family who kept me for two and a half years from the age of two to four and a half, as their child at the risk of their lives and those of their family.
In 1947, we came to the United States and eventually settled in Southern California. When growing up, my parents, like many survivors, did not discuss what life was like when living in Poland to protect me.
After my parent's passed away, I received a letter from Poland addressed to my father, which was the beginning of my journey to understand what took place in our years in Poland.
From then on, my perspective on how lucky we were and what a debt I owed to others became clear. I gained a sense of responsibility to more than just my family and friends, but to causes I believed in and others less fortunate than me.
At Coastline Equity, we have several programs to pay it forward. We allocate a percentage of our annual profit to a variety of charities. We also offer our employees to match their gifts for their favorite charities. I have volunteered at the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor for the past 18 years. I met my partner, Anthony Luna when I was his mentor at the Club during his teenage years. Together, Anthony and I support the Club financially and contribute our time to various Boys & Girls Club programs. Our company offers high school club kids internships, to those interested in real estate, during their winter and summer vacations. Anthony and I know that the Club does change these young people's lives, and we are proud to be a part of the solution.
Whatever we do does not compare to what others have given to me.
