A move goes more smoothly when you know what must be ready before the truck arrives. Set the date with the property team, keep the lease and contact information handy, and leave time to document the condition of the home.
Pack early and label the boxes
Start with items you do not use every day. Sort out what you will keep, donate or discard, then label each box with its contents and destination room. Mark fragile items clearly. Color coding can help when several rooms will be unpacked at once. Keep a first-night bag with bedding, toiletries, medication, chargers and a change of clothes where you can reach it without unpacking the truck.
Check the moving company and estimate
Ask for recommendations, then verify the mover independently. Get more than one written estimate and compare the services, inventory, payment terms and damage coverage. For a move within California, use the Bureau of Household Goods and Services consumer guide and license search to check the mover. BHGS says a visual inspection is required with the estimate for an in-state move. For a move into or out of California, also check the mover through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Do not assume the same estimate rules apply to both types of move.
Before work begins, review the written moving agreement, the inventory and any charge for added services. Keep your own photos of valuable or fragile items and a copy of the documents you sign.
Coordinate the new home before move-in
Confirm key pickup, access hours and any move-in instructions with the property team. Ask how a needed repair or cleaning item should be reported and when you will receive an update. Do not arrange work on the property without the appropriate approval. Take dated photos of the home's condition at move-in and keep them with the lease and your messages.
Keep essentials, documents and pets close
Carry lease papers, identification, insurance information, medical records and other hard-to-replace documents yourself. If you have pets, plan a safe place for them away from doors and moving traffic, and bring food, medications and familiar bedding. Check any pet-related lease terms and vaccination or transport requirements that apply before moving day.
