At the last County Supervisor Board Meeting of the year and without much notice to the public, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to extend the countywide eviction moratorium by one month. The moratorium was set to sunset on 12/31/2022, but has been extended to 01/31/2023.
The Supervisors plan to review a possible six month extension when they meet again in January. The Supervisors have argued that the extension is related to the homelessness challenge across the county.
Citation from the County Ordinance
"On December 7, 2022, the City of Los Angeles affirmed that it will end its COVID-19 tenant protections for nonpayment of rent on January 31, 2023, while advancing measures that would expand renter protections more broadly. The fall and winter of 2022 has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases, concurrently with a surge in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases Countywide and across the nation, exhibiting the continued public health crisis in the County. An extension will help reduce the number of households displaced this winter as the County faces what some are calling a respiratory illness trifecta.
Thus, the County should extend the Tenant Protections Resolution through January 31, 2023.
I THEREFORE MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS:
1. Extend the Resolution through January 31, 2023, to reduce the number of households displaced this winter as the County faces a respiratory illness trifecta due to the combined effect of COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus, and influenza."
