How to Decorate a Rental Without Damaging Walls

Anthony A. Luna • December 25, 2024

You can make a rental feel like yours without starting with paint or holes in the wall. Check your lease first, use freestanding pieces where you can, and get written permission before an alteration. Even products labeled removable can leave a mark.

Check the lease before you buy materials

Look for rules on paint, wallpaper, mounting hardware, adhesives, and changes to fixtures. If the lease is unclear, describe the change to your property manager and ask for a written answer. Permission for one kind of hook or wall finish does not automatically cover another.

Start with pieces that do not attach to the wall

A rug, floor lamp, bookshelf, or leaning mirror can change how a room feels without altering a surface. Put protective pads under furniture and confirm that tall pieces are stable. Keep exits, vents, electrical panels, and safety devices clear.

Use a rug, washable cushion covers or a throw to add color without covering the wall. Repeat one or two colors across those pieces, then change the arrangement before buying more. For room priorities and a complete shopping budget, see our rental decorating budget guide.

Position a freestanding mirror where it reflects daylight or an arrangement you like. Follow its installation and stability instructions. If it needs wall restraints, include them in your permission request rather than assuming a leaning mirror needs no attachment.

Choose plants for the light in the room, and try different heights on freestanding tables or stands. Use saucers to keep water off floors and sills. Keep watering clear of electrical equipment and leave walkways open.

Lay framed prints on the floor to try a gallery arrangement before attaching anything to the wall. Compare the spacing and overall size, and take a photo of the layout you prefer. For display, consider a shelf or picture ledge that is already approved and installed. If you want to mount something new, ask about the permitted hardware and weight limit first. Do not assume a heavy frame is safe on an adhesive strip.

Treat removable products as a test, not a guarantee

Peel-and-stick wallpaper, decals, hooks, and tapes react differently to paint, texture, moisture, and time. Follow the manufacturer's surface and removal instructions. After obtaining any required approval, test a small, inconspicuous area before covering a wall. Stop if paint lifts or residue remains, and ask your manager before trying a chemical remover or repair.

For product-specific instructions, see 3M's picture-hanging strip application and removal guide and Tempaper's wallpaper surface and testing guidance. Check the directions for the exact product you plan to use; one brand's instructions do not apply to every adhesive or covering.

Tension rods can work for some lightweight curtains if the window and frame allow them. Check that the rod cannot slip or damage the trim. Keep cords out of reach of children and pets.

Make move-out easier while you decorate

  • Photograph the surface before and after installing anything removable.
  • Keep packaging and removal instructions for adhesives and coverings.
  • Ask how an approved alteration should be removed or restored when you leave.

These steps reduce surprises; they do not promise a particular security-deposit outcome. If you live in a Coastline-managed home, start at the resident portal page for your account and contact information. Ask your manager about a proposed change before buying materials.
